About Scope3

Scope3 is redefining advertising for an AI-first world, building the foundation for agentic advertising that connects brands with their audiences—wherever they are. Brand agents on the Scope3 platform drive measurably better media outcomes while enabling safe and sustainable growth. Our partners include leading advertisers, agencies, publishers, and platforms across the entire media ecosystem.

We’re a venture backed company of 65 folks distributed across the globe. We are fortunate to be led by an experienced leadership team, many of whom designed and engineered the digital advertising landscape as we know it today. The company secured $20M in Series B funding led by GV in Oct 2023 (additional investors include Venrock, Rucker Park, Room40 Ventures, and Craft Ventures), and we are thrilled to be the recipient of an additional round of $25M in Oct 2024. Scope3 has significant market traction with more than 150+ customers and is experiencing accelerated growth.

Scope3 is a fully remote company and largely asynchronous with teams across North America, Europe, and APAC.

About the Role

We're seeking an Engineering Manager for our Real-Time Data Systems team who codes. Not someone who used to write backend systems, but someone who still ships production code and maintains the technical depth to make sound architectural decisions about data pipelines at scale.

You'll lead a team of 3: 2 backend engineers and a data scientist (growing over time) responsible for ingesting, processing, and delivering real-time advertising data at massive scale. This includes building ML and LLM pipelines that power our AI-driven sustainability insights, maintaining high-throughput data systems, and ensuring our infrastructure scales reliably as we grow. Your team's work directly enables Scope3's ability to model the digital advertising supply chain and deliver real-time carbon emission measurements to our customers.

Roughly half your time writing code—building features in data pipelines, optimizing performance bottlenecks, reviewing system architecture, addressing production issues. The other half on leadership: developing your engineers through 1-on-1s, hiring, sprint planning, collaborating cross-functionally, and making architectural decisions that keep systems scalable and maintainable.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a team of 3, fostering their technical growth and career development
  • Write production code regularly—you're a working member of the team, not just directing traffic
  • Design and oversee architecture of real-time data pipelines processing billions of advertising events
  • Build and maintain ML and LLM pipelines that power AI-driven sustainability analytics
  • Make architectural decisions that balance performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost
  • Drive initiatives to improve system reliability, observability, and operational excellence
  • Collaborate with data science, product, and infrastructure teams to deliver customer value
  • Manage hiring, onboarding, and team growth as we scale
  • Own capacity planning and resource allocation for the team
  • Establish best practices for code quality, testing, and system design in high-throughput environments

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience building and scaling large data systems
  • 2+ years managing or leading engineering teams while maintaining hands-on technical contributions
  • You still code regularly and have no plans to stop—this role requires equal parts coding and leadership
  • Strong proficiency in Javascript, & Python with experience building production systems at scale
  • Proven experience building ML and LLM pipelines in production environments
  • Deep understanding of real-time data processing, stream processing, and event-driven architectures
  • Track record designing systems that handle high throughput while maintaining reliability and low latency
  • Experience with data pipeline orchestration, monitoring, and debugging at scale
  • Strong focus on system maintainability, operational excellence, and technical debt management
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and modern deployment practices
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to mentor engineers at different experience levels
  • Comfort making architectural tradeoffs and explaining decisions clearly

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or Agent-to-Agent (A2A) communication
  • Golang proficiency
  • Familiarity with advertising technology data and metrics
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and workflow orchestration systems (e.g., Temporal)
  • Background in data engineering, distributed systems, or machine learning infrastructure

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $160k-$200k USD, $170k-$200k CAD.

These ranges span multiple location-based salary bands across the US and Canada. Candidates are aligned to a narrower range based on geographic market compensation data specific to where they live, and final offers reflect demonstrated skills, experience, and role expectations.

Benefits & Perks:
Details vary by location (USA/Canada), but all employees receive:

  • Health & wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with significant employer contribution; short- and long-term disability coverage; health savings/flexible spending options
  • Retirement: Employer-matched retirement savings plan (401(k) or RRSP)
  • Time off: Generous paid time off, statutory holidays, and year-end office closure
  • Parental leave: 13 weeks fully paid (eligibility requirements apply)
  • Remote work: Company-provided home office equipment, setup stipend, and access to WeWork spaces
  • Equity: Stock options for eligible roles

Our Culture & Values

  • Passion for the environment and climate work. We are a mission-driven company, and this is what motivates us to work hard and deliver outcomes for our customers.
  • Clear and empathetic communication, especially while working asynchronously. We have always been a global, remote-first company and we collaborate using Notion, Miro, Slack, Loom, and other tools.
  • We celebrate healthy conflict in the workplace; we focus on the solutions and we move on quickly.
  • The ability and accountability to deliver what we promise. We do what we say we will do, and we don’t make promises we can’t keep.
  • Experience driving systemic change. Our mission is to make advertising and AI more effective for the economy and the environment, and this requires a holistic approach to re-imagining and inspiring an industry movement at a global scale.
