Full-time
The Boring Company is seeking a highly motivated and technically strong Field Operations Engineer to take ownership of the Liner Truck subsystem supporting tunneling operations in Las Vegas. The Liner Truck is a mission-critical piece of our tunnel lining workflow, and this role requires relentless attention to uptime, rapid troubleshooting, and tight coordination with the design and engineering teams in Bastrop, Texas.
You will be responsible for keeping the Liner Truck system online, safe, and productive, often under high pressure and in dynamic field conditions.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary owner of the Liner Truck subsystem in the field, ensuring maximum uptime, safe operation, and reliable performance during daily tunneling and lining activities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, control, and automation issues in real time, performing hands-on adjustments, repairs, and component replacements as needed.
- Monitor subsystem operational data, analyze performance trends, and implement improvements to increase throughput, reduce cycle times, and minimize downtime.
- Collaborate closely with the Liner Truck design and engineering teams in Texas, providing field feedback, participating in design reviews, and supporting the testing and rollout of new hardware and software updates.
- Coordinate the production flow of liner segments from delivery through installation, ensuring continuous material availability and seamless integration with tunnel operations.
- Conduct regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and quality control checks to ensure compliance with engineering specifications, operational standards, and safety protocols.
- Work cross-functionally with tunneling, logistics, maintenance, and project management teams to align schedules, resolve operational constraints, and maintain efficient field execution.
- Develop and deliver training, documentation, SOPs, and troubleshooting resources for field personnel supporting or operating the Liner Truck subsystem.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tunneling and heavy equipment best practices, bringing forward new ideas to enhance reliability, productivity, and operational
excellence.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, industrial engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience in field operations within construction, heavy equipment, industrial automation, or infrastructure environments.
- Strong hands-on technical experience with mechanical systems, hydraulics, controls, and electromechanical equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve issues in high-pressure, time-sensitive field environments.
- Proficiency with data acquisition, analysis tools, and data-driven decision making.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate closely with both on-site crews and remote engineering teams.
- Strong project management and prioritization capabilities.
- Flexibility to work long hours in a fast-paced environment, including spending ~50% of time in the tunnel.
- Knowledge of safety standards for construction, heavy equipment operation, or underground environments.
- Experience with supply chain, maintenance planning, or complex equipment logistics is highly desirable.
