Full-time
The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more, with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Buildout Engineer to lead the transformation of newly constructed tunnels into fully operational transportation systems for the Music City Loop project. This role is responsible for taking tunnel structures from civil completion through final systems integration - delivering the infrastructure that brings the tunnel to life.
The ideal candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with a hands-on execution mindset and has experience coordinating complex infrastructure buildouts involving roadway systems, electrical distribution, fire/life safety systems, architectural finishes, and operational readiness. This role will work cross-functionally with design, construction, operations, and commissioning teams to ensure tunnels are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.
Responsibilities
  • Lead post-construction tunnel buildout activities including roadway panels, wall and ceiling finishes, drainage interfaces, lighting, electrical systems, fire/life safety systems, communications infrastructure, and signage.
  • Manage the transition from tunnel excavation and structural completion into fit-out and systems installation phases.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, electrical, controls, fire protection, and operations teams to ensure seamless integration of all tunnel systems.
  • Develop installation plans, sequencing strategies, and schedules to optimize construction efficiency within constrained underground environments.
  • Oversee contractor and vendor performance during buildout activities, ensuring quality, safety, and schedule adherence.
  • Support procurement and specification of equipment, materials, and specialty systems required for tunnel completion.
  • Drive field problem-solving during installation, commissioning, and punch-list closeout.
  • Ensure all systems and installations comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (NFPA, OSHA, NEC, local AHJ requirements, etc.).
  • Support startup, testing, commissioning, and handoff of completed tunnels to operations teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve future tunnel buildout speed, cost, constructibility, and standardization across projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience delivering complex infrastructure, industrial, transportation, or large-scale MEP buildout projects.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, systems integration, and field execution in constrained or high-complexity environments.
  • Experience with one or more of the following systems: electrical distribution, fire protection, roadway systems, controls, communications, or architectural finishes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, schedules, and installation plans.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Hands-on, problem-solving mindset with willingness to work in the field and drive execution directly.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, engineering-driven environment with aggressive timelines.
