The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
Our Integration Engineering team is responsible for Production & Integration of the systems of our Tunnel Boring Machines and related systems, with the primary focus of improving manufacturability.
Responsibilities
- Owner of large scale production of a complex system in a fast paced environment
- Subject matter expert on system function and manufacturing
- Lead continuous improvements of system manufacturability by optimizing process, cost, quality, simplicity and efficiency
- Solve complex problems via scrappy, and systematic solutions
- Identify, implement and manage batch “production running” of assemblies, taking full responsibility for bulk purchasing and strategic outsourcing.
- Evaluate and engineer production flow, ensuring complete oversight and accountability for effective build processes
- Monitor production capacity and independently drive actionable, high-impact recommendations for process improvements
- Synthesize real-world data across manufacturing, testing, R&D, mining, and design to independently drive design and manufacturing enhancements
- Design and Integrate jigs to improve ease of production
- Oversee the pipeline for upcoming design changes, taking accountability for accurate purchasing and the seamless production of future machines
- Author and maintain comprehensive work instructions and quality documentation to establish the standard for floor operations
- Guide and direct skilled trades (machinists, welders, mechanics) on the floor, providing hands-on technical expertise and leadership to resolve complex challenges
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors or graduate degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or Mechatronics) or a related field
- 2+ years of experience of design using CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and prototype design/testing
- Experience in a manufacturing environment and working closely with the floor / production line
- Strong teamwork and leadership skills with a proven ability to effectively interact, collaborate, and communicate with other engineering disciplines and skilled Trades laborers
- Hands-on hardware experience performing fabrication, assembly and/or testing - can be in a professional, academic or recreational setting.
- Acute attention to detail
Preferred Skills And Experience
- Proficiency in mechanical design
- Familiarity with basic safety and quality standards
- Familiarity with production concepts such as TPS, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, etc.
- Ability to interpret Hydraulic schematics - Bonus
- Knowledgeable in mechatronics, fluid power system concepts, material selection, and common manufacturing processes
- Experience working around or on heavy machinery and construction sites
- Experience in leadership on technical teams
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work in underground tunnel and on construction sites
- Readiness to travel to tunnels and job sites across the US on short notice as required to develop and deploy new designs, in addition to troubleshooting and resolving problems with current infrastructure.
- Ability to move fast to solve unpredictable manufacturing challenges and eagerness to dive in alongside the team when critical equipment or production needs arise
- Enthusiastic about urgently solving problems and hitting milestones
